Our guest today is the absolutely amazing Jayashree Ratan the co-founder of Saaisha India Foundation- a Mumbai-based charitable organization founded along with her husband Mr. Kumar Ratan. After resigning from her banking service, Jayashree came across the Knitted Knockers site on her visit to the US. A visit to a relative who had undergone a mastectomy & gifting her a pair of knockers, it was the feedback that made Jayashree start Saisha on March
13th, 2018.
Today Saaisha India is registered with Washington state-based knittedknockers.org of USA as one of the providers of 100% cotton breast prostheses for Mastectomy patients (lovingly called “Knockers”) in India. They follow the patterns and processes of knittedknockers.org of USA and the Knockers are provided Free of cost including postage.
Experienced knitters & crocheters who join Saaisha India knit & crochet these prostheses as per the approved pattern, which are then filled up with poly fiber and given to the mastectomy patients who are called beneficiaries.
Even experienced Knitters/ Crocheters have to undergo training initially so that perfect knockers are made. Saaisha has several quality control checks to ensure this. The volunteers have no targets and are free to make as many or as little as they want. Saaisha’s Volunteer base has grown from 21 in 2018 to currently over 350 spread across 5 countries.
The Knockers are made generally in 4 cup sizes A, B, C, and D. If the patient has undergone a single mastectomy they are provided with 2 Knockers, and those who have undergone bilateral mastectomy are provided with 4 knockers. Beneficiaries are given replacement Knockers Free on request after 24 months.
The feedback received by Saaisha from beneficiaries indicates a high level of satisfaction especially relating to the restoration of confidence, light weight, not feeling hot, unlike other prostheses, easy to maintain, etc.,
